On November 21, 1986, as Attorney General Edwin Meese's investigators begin reviewing NSC files, Fawn Hall — Oliver North's secretary — makes a fateful choice. In OTL she assisted North in shredding documents and smuggled others out in her clothing. In this timeline, Hall, alarmed by the scale of destruction and uncertain of her own legal exposure, quietly pockets a printed hard copy of a PROF (Professional Office System) message sent October 9, 1986, from National Security Advisor John Poindexter to North. The message reads in part: 'Discussed full picture with Principal. No objections raised. Proceed on current track — he wants staff-level exposure kept minimal.' Hall preserves the document rather than feeding it into the shredder. When independent counsel Lawrence Walsh's investigators interview Hall in early December 1986 — weeks earlier than in OTL — she produces the printout through her attorney under proffer terms. Walsh's office spends early 1987 authenticating the document against recovered backup-tape fragments and navigating Classified Information Procedures Act complications. Confronted with the authenticated printout during negotiations that stretch through spring and summer 1987, Poindexter abandons his 'I acted alone to protect the President' defense. By August 1987 — concurrent with the peak of the televised congressional Iran-Contra hearings — Poindexter finalizes a cooperation agreement with Walsh's office. The result: a paper trail and a cooperating witness capable of placing Ronald Reagan's knowing authorization at the center of the Iran-Contra scandal.
